Dessie Spears is a contemporary abstract artist based in Louisville, Kentucky. Raised on a nature preserve in Southern Indiana, she spent her summers working with horses and her winters immersed in art, reading, and sewing. Her upbringing was shaped by two distinctly different parents—her mother, a lover of classical music and intellectual magazines like Psychology Today, Discovery, and The Smithsonian, and her father, who filled their home with the sounds of Country and Bluegrass and stocked National Geographic, Arizona Highways, and Reader’s Digest. Their contrasting styles and interests gave her a broad view of the world, encouraging both curiosity and creativity while fueling her imagination. From both, she inherited a deep appreciation for beauty, hard work, and honesty.

Though art was always her passion, a career in the Operating Engineers found her. Shaping the earth and navigating a male-dominated field became its own form of creative expression. After retiring, she fully embraced her artistic calling, refining her craft through five years in Nick Wilton’s Creative Visionary Program and further studies in color and composition with Mark Eanes. 

Today, Dessie is an active member and Artist Director at Pyro Gallery, where she continues to explore abstraction with a bold and intuitive approach that showcases her upbringing and her life’s journey.
